Rahmanullah Lakanwal, the suspect in the Washington DC shooting, is being investigated for allegedly targeting two National Guard members near the White House. He drove from Washington state to DC and opened fire, critically injuring the guardsmen. Lakanwal, an Afghan national, had worked with the CIA in Afghanistan and entered the US in 2021 under Operation Allies Welcome. He's been charged with assault with intent to kill while armed and possession of a firearm during a crime of violence .

This incident has sparked a political debate, with President Trump ordering a review of asylum cases approved under the Biden administration. Lakanwal's asylum application was approved in April 2025, under Trump's presidency.
Sadly, one of the National Guard members, Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, has passed away, while Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, 24, remains in critical condition.
