The Thanksgiving tradition

The Thanksgiving tradition in the United States has its roots in a 1621 harvest feast shared by English colonists, known as the Pilgrims, and the Wampanoag Native American tribe in Plymouth, Massachusetts. This three-day celebration marked a moment of cooperation and peace between the two groups, who had come together to give thanks for their successful harvest.

However, the modern concept of Thanksgiving as a national holiday wasn't established until much later. In 1789, President George Washington issued the first national Thanksgiving proclamation, designating a day of thanksgiving to be celebrated on November 26, 1789. It wasn't until 1863, during the Civil War, that President Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national holiday, to be celebrated on the last Thursday of November.

The date of Thanksgiving was later changed to the fourth Thursday of November by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1941, where it remains today.
